The baglamas looks and sounds like a miniature bouzouki, played at a higher pitch. It was created during the 1920-30s when “Rembetica” – the Greek blues – was outlawed because of its underworld connection to hashish dens and resistance to authority. Often made from a dry gourd, the baglamas was small enough to be hidden undetected within the folds of a coat, or clasped to the knee and smuggled into prison. Today’s baglamas contributes an essential sound to Greek music, either as part of a bouzouki orchestra or as a solo instrument.
Our baglamas tonewood selection includes spruce and cedar tops and bracewoods. Rib sets, sides and end clasps are available in bubinga, anigre, olive ash, zebrawood, walnut, cherry wood, mahogany, beech, Indian rosewood, sapele, maple and ash. Choose spacers from any of our wide selection of veneers. Neck woods are pre-cut and sanded, ready for gluing, while pegboxes are made to your specification. Fingerboard woods are either ebony or Indian rosewood. We also offer exceptionally high-quality Indian rosewood bridge blanks (please see the link for more information). For purflings and other ornamentation, choose from our large array of decorative wood or synthetic inlays. We also provide essential luthiery supplies including Japanese fret saws, Titebond glue, and hot set fish glue.
